Bigger than Birds & Bees: Promoting Safe, Healthy Relationships

November 27 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

$15
Heart and stars

Children with autism want friendships and relationships as much as anyone else. Unfortunately, there is a lack of appropriate education to support safe and healthy relationships. Rates of sexual assault are 7 times higher among individuals with disabilities than for those without and autism makes our children especially vulnerable. But we can work together to counter this troubling reality. We can support our children’s understanding of their own bodies, help them recognize what discomfort or danger feel like, and provide concrete guides for navigating boundaries and expectations around relationships and sexuality. This event will cover issues bigger than “birds and bees” and we’ll have a lot more fun too!

Content is tailored to parents and caregivers of kids with autism and related learning differences, particularly kids ages pre-K through elementary, but material and tools are relevant for older children as well (share your vexing questions here!). Educators, therapists, and clinicians are welcome and will gain valuable insights for serving families. CEUs available!

Katie Thune, MA Ed of Mad Hatter Wellness is an educator and advocate for people with disabilities. She was a Special Education and Health teacher in the St. Paul Public Schools for 12 years. She has done extensive curriculum writing on relationships and sexuality education.
