Last week’s presentation, Behave Yourself!, by Julia Cook was so much fun. Parents and educators explored the power of Cook’s books for children where she breaks down behaviors and offers positive alternatives for all kids. Of particular interest to us was her new RJ series on social skills and friendship tools. It is through making behavior concrete and accessible that we can truly help our kids live up to our expectations. We were especially interested in Cook’s breakdown of creating a supportive learning environment. Ensure these areas are taken care of so you can activate learning.
Kids need to:
- Be Safe
- Be Connected
- Make Choices
- Have Fun
- Be Competent/Confident
Some resources shared were:

- Amazing Me – a book by the CDC which lays out the developmental spectrum for kids
- How Children Succeed by Paul Tough
- Transforming the Difficult Child Workbook by Lisa Bravo and Howard Glasser
- Common Sense Media
