Practical Strategies for Improving Understanding, Communication, and Behavior in Children with Autism
This multimedia presentation focuses on the relationship between comprehension and communication difficulties and challenging behaviors. One of the more challenging aspects of parenting a young child with autism is that the typical strategies for managing problematic behaviors are oftentimes ineffective at best and can lead to escalating patterns of undesired behaviors. So join us to discover why this happens and to learn some alternative and highly effective approaches to managing difficult behaviors. This presentation will provide  an opportunity for parents and educators  to share some of the behaviors their children are presenting and brainstorm effective solutions.
Speaker: Sheila Merzer, MA, LP is a licensed psychologist who has been working in the field of autism since 1972, when it was a low incidence disorder. She co-directed a day treatment program for children with autism and related disorders for 12 years prior to opening her private practice. In her private practice, she and five colleagues provide assessments, consultation, and training services throughout Minnesota. Sheila has presented at local, regional, national and international conferences.
