Therapy Animals: Finding the right fit for your family
October 4, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm$20
Do you know the difference between service dogs, emotional support animals (ESA) and therapy animals? Wondering which option is right for your family’s needs? Join us and learn what their jobs are, and how each type supports children with autism. Current research about dogs will be shared, highlighting the information that increases your knowledge in this area. Leave with tips on how to best interact with this unique species.
In addition we will cover other emotional support animal options that work well with children living with autism. There will be a demonstration with therapy guinea pigs, and a variety of suggestions for therapeutic animal interventions for children with autism will be shared.
Speaker: Patti Anderson, MEd, CPDT, has taught Therapy Animal classes in the Twin Cities for nine years and is an evaluator for the national organization Pet Partners. She has been working with her own registered therapy animals in a variety of venues for 16 years and presented on this topic at several state conferences. Patti co-teaches an Animal Assisted Therapy course in the psychology department at Saint Mary’s University in Minneapolis.
